Lipsic against Same Sex Marriages in The Hague

Slovak version Slovak version

BRATISLAVA/THE HAGUE, October 2, (SITA) – Three EU countries: Malta, Finland and Spain have supported Slovak Justice Minister Daniel Lipsic who rejected mutual acknowledging of same sex marriages by EU countries. In his speech at the informal meeting of the Council of Home Affairs and Justice in The Hague, the Netherlands, Mr. Lipsic presented the stance of his cabinet to leave the issues of the family law in competency of individual EU member countries.

Only Spain where the Socialists are in power opposed the stance presented by Mr. Lipsic. Other EU members did not express their opinions on the issue. However, Mr. Lipsic views this as a success of his country. Minister Lipsic insists that it should be up on individual countries to recognize same sex marriages. The attitude to this issue should not be harmonized within the European Union. Though the community law does not make it possible to harmonize the family law, the duty to recognize same sex marriages in another EU country would mean “indirect harmonization”, according to the minister. He thinks that the Dutch presidium of the Council has accepted this opinion with understanding. Mr. Lipsic suggests that in Slovakia a marriage should be understood traditionally, as an institution that secures survival of society. The state thus should give the privileged status only to the traditional marriage.
